Improving the diet with herbs

In order to keep the horse's gastro-intestinal system healthy, it is very important to take the natural needs of the horse into account when feeding. It is therefore not surprising that animals such as horses are able to find the nutrients they need themselves. In nature they extract these substances from bark, herbs, clay and plants. Many animals are capable of self-medication, also called Zoopharmacognosy. In this way, a horse receives essential oils and minerals that are necessary for a good condition, shedding and repairing, for example, injuries or wounds.
The diversity of herbs and plants has decreased in the current horse pasture. Due to overgrazing many herbs can not sufficiently root and grow. Fertilization and a lack of soil diversity and organic matter also result in only a few strong grasses.
To increase the diversity of nutrients you can already tackle a few things yourself. Many herbs and plants can be found around the house in your own garden.
Herbs that you can safely feed:
- Nettle
- Lemon balm
- Mint
- Marigold (the leaves) pick
- Chamomile
- Plantain
- Dandelion
Do not pick the herbs on the roadside due to contamination. You can give the herbs fresh over the hay or let them air dry first. You must feed these herbs in moderation. If the horse does not eat them then there is probably no need or the horse does not like it.
Feeding branches and tree bark
Many horses also love tree bark. Especially the tree bark of the willow they find very tasty and is healthy. The branches of a birch or lime tree are also safe to give. Bark contains a lot of fiber, healthy nutrients such as minerals, prevents boredom and stimulates natural behavior.
Herbs in horse feed
Herbs in horse feed provide an extra refined taste. In addition to this benefit, healing properties are also attributed to herbs. Natural medicine has frequently shown in practice that herbs can support and influence the resistance and health of the horse.
